If you’re wondering what furniture trends are on their way to blow your hair (or curtains) back this year, look no further.

Our head stylist, Cheryl Du Preez, recently attended the IMM Cologne Fair in Germany—one of the year’s biggest furniture events where designers from around the world show off their latest creations—for an exciting sneak peek into the trends that will shape the industry in 2024.

“The trends that emerged from this captivating event highlighted a fusion of sustainability, innovation and artistry,” says Cheryl. “From nature-inspired design to tech-infused elegance, these trends reflect the ever-evolving aspirations of individuals who want to create spaces that are not only functional but also expressions of their unique personalities.”

Join us as we take a closer look at 7 key furniture trends that are set to breathe fresh inspiration into the spaces we call home as we begin 2024.

Whether you're a fan of retro or modern, a nature lover or technophile, there's never been a more exciting time to be a furniture and home decor enthusiast!

Earth-Friendly Furnishings

As consumers we’re all becoming more aware of the environmental impact of the products we buy and use every day. Sustainability has long been the buzzword, and furniture designers and manufacturers are responding to a much higher demand for earth-friendly furniture that’s not only made from sustainable materials but produced in an environmentally responsible way.

It’s no surprise then that sustainability was a dominant theme at IMM, with a large proportion of showcased designs featuring reclaimed wood, recycled metals, and eco-friendly textiles as their main components.

We love this trend since it not only helps the environment, but results in more unique and characterful designs that tell a story and remind us why we love our planet in the first place!

Biophilic Design

Furniture trends in 2024 aren’t just about protecting nature but connecting with it more by fusing Biophilic design into our homes.

Going into next year, we’ll be seeing a lot of furniture pieces inspired by natural forms, and featuring natural colours and materials like wood, bamboo and rattan.

Be on the lookout for an upward trend in live-edge wooden tables, botanical patterned upholstery, and plenty of indoor plants integrated into more of our daily spaces.

A multifunctional ottoman is a perfect example of limiting space and being compact, while being a comfortable addition to your modular couch.

Nostalgia meets modernity

2024 also promises a revival of retro styles with a contemporary twist, creating a new bridge between past and future.

Judging from many of the designs on display at IMM, we’ll be seeing a triumphant return of Mid-century modern furniture, Scandinavian minimalism, and art deco aesthetics, with a fresh infusion of modern materials and finishes. These pieces maintain a strong theme of functionality that’s effortlessly elegant.

Bold is the new black

It’s about time to say goodbye to the beige. The neutral tones that have long dominated interior design are about to make way for furniture pieces adorned in jewel tones, rich earthy hues, and bold colours.

We’re looking forward to an exciting mix of textures like velvet, leather, and natural fibres that will add depth and enrich the sensory experience that comes with furniture.

This trend promises to inject new life into our home decor and create stunning interiors that are a treat for the senses.

When looking for a new piece of furniture for  a simple room, try thinking bold. Have at least one piece of statement furniture.

Intelligent Furniture

As technology is rapidly advancing and becoming more integrated into all aspects of our lives, it’s no surprise that this is impacting furniture design as well.

In the coming years we’re likely to see furniture with integrated tech like built-in charging stations or wireless charging surfaces, speakers and even adjustable beds and lighting.

And of course, we’ll all be keeping an eye on how AI impacts furniture design in the next few years!
