A Complete Guide to Buying a Bed in SA

Bedroom
Few things affect daily life as directly as where you sleep. A great bed changes how you rest, how the bedroom feels, and how you start every morning.
Buying a bed in South Africa involves more decisions than most people expect. Sizing, frame style, mattress type, headboard: they all play a role, and getting them right together is what turns a bedroom into a space worth returning to. This guide covers all of it.
What You Need to Know About Bed Sizes in SA
South Africa uses its own sizing conventions, which differ slightly from international standards. Understanding these before you shop saves confusion later.
Standard SA bed sizes:
● Single: 91.5 x 187.5 cm, suited to children's rooms and compact single bedrooms
● Three-quarter (3/4): 107 x 187.5 cm, a wider single, popular for older children and teenagers
● Double: 137 x 187.5 cm, comfortable for solo sleepers who want room to move, workable for couples who sleep close
● Queen: 152 x 187.5 cm, the most common choice for main bedrooms across South Africa
● King: 182.5 x 187.5 cm, generous for couples; needs a room that can breathe around it
● Queen XL: 152 x 200 cm, standard width, longer length, suits taller people
● King XL: 182.5 x 200 cm, the largest standard SA size; offers full length for tall sleepers
Queen is the most popular size in South African bedrooms. King and King XL make sense if the room is large enough to give the bed proper clearance, with at least 60 cm on either side as the general guideline.
One practical check: measure the room with furniture in mind before committing to a size. A bed that fills the entire floor plan is not a bed you will enjoy.

Upholstered Beds
Upholstered frames are among the most popular choices in contemporary South African bedrooms. Fabric adds warmth, texture, and the kind of considered softness that makes a bedroom feel genuinely restful rather than merely functional.
The Madison Bed is a long-standing favourite in the Cielo range.
A wingback design with diamond tufting defines the Madison's built-in headboard, creating a bed that references classic English design while feeling thoroughly at home in a modern South African interior. The upholstered base brings the whole piece together and is available in a range of fabric options to suit different bedroom palettes.
For a bedroom with a darker, more dramatic character, the Haven Bed takes a different direction.
A sturdy frame of solid reclaimed pine supports a built-in headboard upholstered in PU fabric with blind tufting. The contrast between natural timber and dark upholstery creates a bedroom that feels grounded and deliberate, resulting in a space that has a clear point of view.
What to consider when choosing an upholstered bed:
● Match the fabric tone to the broader bedroom palette (warm neutrals, earthy tones, or deep accent colours)
● Blind tufting and piped seam detailing add visual interest without requiring strong colour
● A built-in headboard and base combination create a cohesive look with less effort
Featured Product: Asgard 4 Poster Bed - King XL
Statement Beds and Four-Poster Frames
A four-poster bed is one of the few furniture choices that genuinely transforms a room rather than simply furnishing it. The vertical posts create a visual frame around the sleeping space, adding height, presence, and a sense of occasion that a low-profile base cannot replicate.
The Asgard 4 Poster Bed does this with a natural material that only adds to the effect.
Crafted from reclaimed pine with a naturally aged finish, the Asgard brings a warm, rustic grandeur to the bedroom. The natural variations in the timber mean no two pieces look exactly alike, an inherent quality of reclaimed wood. The slatted base supports all mattress types, and the four-post silhouette works best in rooms with the ceiling height and floor space to match its proportions.
Getting the Mattress Right
The frame is what you see. The mattress is what you feel. Most sleep issues trace back to a mattress choice rather than a frame one.

Memory Foam and Pocket Spring Mattresses
A hybrid mattress that combines memory foam with pocket springs is the most versatile option for most South African households. The memory foam contours to the body and relieves pressure at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. The pocket springs provide responsive support and isolate movement so a partner's shifting does not disturb your sleep.
The Cloud Comfort Mattress is one of Cielo's most consistent performers in this category.
The Visco Pedic Cloud Comfort uses high-density memory foam over individually wrapped pocket springs, with a foam-encased spring system that provides full edge support across the entire mattress surface. A MASTERGUARD fabric treatment protects against oil and water-based stains, which matters in the long run. The medium-firm rating (7/10) suits a wide range of sleeping positions.
Key things to look for in a mattress:
Motion isolation:
Individually wrapped pocket springs prevent one person's movement from disturbing the other.
Edge support:
A foam-encased spring system ensures you get the full use of the mattress surface, including the edges.
Firmness:
Medium-firm suits most people; softer suits side sleepers, firmer suits stomach sleepers.
Hypoallergenic materials:
Memory foam is naturally resistant to allergens and dust mites.
Featured Product: SlumberFlex Adjustable Bed - King XL
Adjustable Beds
An adjustable bed is no longer a specialist product. Independent head and foot movement, remote-controlled positioning, and the ability to personalise your sleeping angle for health, comfort, or convenience are features with genuine everyday relevance.
The Visco Pedic Adjustable Bed and Infinity Mattress brings this technology to a King XL configuration.
The Infinity Mattress is specifically designed for motorised adjustable bases, supporting the body's natural curves through every position change. The SlumberFlex system adjusts independently at the head and foot, activated by remote control.
The benefits extend beyond sleep, offering reduced pressure on joints, improved circulation, and the practical advantage of a bed that adjusts to whatever you are doing, whether it’s resting, reading, or watching television.
One important note: adjustable beds require a purpose-designed mattress. Standard pocket spring or memory foam mattresses are not compatible with motorised bases.
Featured Product: Alexa Dual Function Bed - Double - Alaska Grey
Dual-Function Beds: More Use from the Same Space
Not every bedroom has space to spare. In children's rooms, guest rooms, and smaller main bedrooms, a bed that does more than one job is a practical solution, provided the design does not suffer for it.
The Alexa Dual Function Bed gets this balance right.
A generously proportioned headboard with large grid tufting and a clean upholstered base contains a pull-out secondary bed beneath. The pull-out sits flush with the base when not in use and extends easily when the room needs a second sleeping space.
Dual-function beds work particularly well in:
● Children's rooms that need to accommodate sleepovers
● Guest rooms that double as home offices
● Smaller main bedrooms where a secondary base provides flexibility without permanent space commitment
The Headboard: The Detail That Finishes the Room
A headboard does more than frame the bed. It establishes the visual character of the entire bedroom, anchors the sleeping space, and affects how comfortable it is to sit up in bed.
This step is often treated as an afterthought. It should not be.

Tufted Headboards
Tufting adds texture, depth, and a sense of craft to an upholstered headboard. The detail is both decorative and practical, because a well-padded tufted headboard provides genuine back support for anyone who reads or works sitting up in bed.
The Genevieve Headboard takes this approach with diamond tufting and generous padding.
Available across a wide range of fabrics and colours, the Genevieve is one of the more adaptable tufted headboards in Cielo's range. The diamond-tufted front adds classic warmth without committing the room to a single design decade, and it works as naturally in a neutral contemporary space as it does in a more traditionally styled bedroom.

Panel Headboards
A vertical panel headboard offers a cleaner, more architectural look. It reads as modern without being cold, and it works well in bedrooms where the overall aesthetic leans contemporary and restrained.
The Harlem Headboard is handmade and available in velvet, PU, or high-quality polyester upholstery in a wide range of colours.
The vertical panelled design creates height and visual structure behind the bed, grounding the sleeping space without overwhelming it. The versatility of the upholstery options makes the Harlem adaptable across bedroom palettes, from warm neutrals and natural tones to deep, saturated statement colours.
Featured Product: Matlock Leather Headboard - Queen - Burnt Tan
Leather Headboards
A full-grain leather headboard brings something different to the room: a material that is distinctly tactile, naturally hypoallergenic, and develops more character over time.
The Matlock Leather Headboard is wall-mounted and features reversed seam stitching that adds a considered design detail to the leather surface.
The French cleat mounting system makes installation straightforward. The reversed seam stitching provides visual interest and warmth without relying on tufting, colour, or heavy texture. The leather itself carries the room. In a tan tone, it sits naturally alongside warm timber furniture, warm-white linen, and natural-material accessories.
Headboard considerations:
● Match headboard height to ceiling height. A taller headboard looks better in rooms with generous ceiling height
● Wall-mounted headboards allow a more tailored, fitted look; freestanding options offer more flexibility
● Consider the depth of the headboard padding if you sit up to read or work in bed
Putting It All Together
The best bedroom setups begin with a clear idea of how the room should feel, and then work backwards from that.
Start with the frame, because it sets the design direction for everything else.
Then choose the mattress based on how you sleep: your position, whether you share the bed, and what specific support needs matter to you. Do not skip this step in favour of aesthetics.
Finally, add the headboard. It is the last piece to choose and the one that finishes the room.
Cielo's bedroom range covers every step of this process, from bed frames and mattresses to headboards and the accessories that complete the space. Explore the full range and find the combination that feels right for your lifestyle.
