Bar Chair or Counter Chair: What Height Do You Need?

Few things throw a kitchen or entertainment area off quite like seating at the wrong height. Choose a bar chair for a counter, or a counter chair for a raised bar, and you end up either perched uncomfortably high or reaching up to rest your elbows. It is one of the most common slip-ups people make when kitting out a kitchen island or home bar, and thankfully, it is also one of the easiest to avoid. Getting it right comes down to a single measurement. Before you shop our range of bar and counter chairs, here is how to work out exactly what height you need, along with a few favourites to match every setup.
Seating for raised surfaces falls into two main types, and the names are often used interchangeably, which is where the confusion starts. The real difference is all in the seat height, measured from the floor to the top of the seat.
• Counter-height chairs have a seat roughly 600 to 680mm from the floor. They are made for standard kitchen counters and islands, which usually sit around 900mm high.
• Bar-height chairs have a taller seat, roughly 730 to 780mm from the floor. They suit raised bar counters and higher entertainment tops, which generally stand around 1,050 to 1,100mm high.
Pair them correctly and there is a comfortable, natural gap between your knees and the underside of the counter. Get it wrong and the chair either swallows the counter or leaves you stretching to reach it, which nobody wants halfway through a relaxed Sunday breakfast.
You do not need to guess. The ideal seat height is set by the surface it pairs with, so that is where to start.
1. Measure from the floor to the top of your counter or bar.
2. Subtract 250 to 300mm.
3. The result is your ideal seat height.
That gap leaves comfortable room for your legs, so you can sit down, cross your legs and stand up again with ease. As a quick guide:
• A 900mm kitchen counter pairs with a counter chair of around 600 to 650mm.
• A 1,050mm bar counter pairs with a bar chair of around 750mm.
If your surface height lands somewhere in between, let the measurement lead and round to the closest available seat height.

Still unsure which way to go? It usually comes down to the surface you are working with. Most South African kitchens are built with a standard counter or island at around 900mm, which calls for counter-height seating. Raised breakfast bars, home bars and bar ledges are built taller, usually around 1,050mm, and need bar-height chairs to match.
• Kitchen islands and standard counters: choose counter height.
• Raised breakfast bars, home bars and patio bar counters: choose bar height.
If you are planning a new kitchen from scratch, settle on your counter height first and let your seating follow. It is far easier than trying to track down a chair to fit an awkward in-between measurement later on.

Height is the big one, but a couple of finer points will make your seating even more comfortable.
• Spacing: Allow around 150 to 300mm between each chair so people can sit without bumping elbows. As a rule of thumb, leave about 600mm of counter width per stool.
• Backrests and arms: A backrest adds support for longer sits and lingering conversations, while a backless stool like the Solo tucks away neatly and keeps sightlines open.
• Material and upkeep: Leather and wood provide warmth and character, while wipe-clean finishes like the Yara’s polypropylene suit busy, high-traffic kitchens.
• Footrests: A built-in footrest makes any raised chair more comfortable, giving your legs somewhere to settle while you sit.
Choosing between a bar chair and a counter chair really does come down to one number. Measure your counter, subtract 250 to 300mm, and match that figure to the seat height. From there, it is all about the look and feel you are after, from warm timber and full-grain leather to bold, wipe-clean colour.
