Looking for the top bedroom design trends to make your favourite space even more irresistible in 2023? You’ve come to the right place.  With so many of us having spent the better part of the last three years in the home bubble, it’s no surprise that creating an inviting and peaceful personal space has become even more of a priority. If you’ve sensed an increasing desire to curl up like a kitten and retreat into your private bedroom hideaway, don’t worry— you’re not alone (although, that’s probably what you were going for!).  This growing desire to turn our bedrooms into the perfect personal sanctuary has in fact emerged as a key trend defining bedroom design for 2023. Of course there are many other trends floating about too. But the good news is that you don’t have to follow fifty Pinstagrammers or have a degree in interior design to create a trendy bedroom look this year. Because in 2023, it’s much less about following a specific design style, and more about blurring the lines to create a luxurious and alluring bedroom aesthetic that expresses your personal style (and releases your inner kitten!).  So, find your furry slippers. It’s time to embrace that nesting instinct, and turn your bedroom into a cosy getaway any cat would envy.  With that, here are our 5 top designer trends to get you happily nestled in this year.

1. Keep it natural

Everyone seems to have caught on to the idea that using nature-inspired elements indoors helps us feel more peaceful and connected to our surroundings. The natural trend has been growing for a few years now, and it’s not going anywhere in 2023.  In the bedroom, you can go with natural materials like wood and rattan for furniture, complemented by light and airy natural fabrics such as cottons and linens for bedding, cushions and curtains.  “Combining light to medium-toned furniture with earthy hues and textures will make your bedroom feel naturally warmer and turn it into a comforting space,” says Cielo head stylist, Cheryl du Preez. “A soft natural fibre rug made from wool or jute is a great way to add an extra layer of warmth and texture, and tie the natural look together. And it’s always a nice touch to bring in a houseplant or two to freshen up your space.”  As consumers, it’s also comforting to know that we’re populating our homes with furniture and décor made from organic, recyclable and sustainable materials that have less impact on the environment and help reduce waste.

2. Use asymmetry, mixed fabrics and textures

In the 2020s we’ve been waving goodbye to white-washed, clean-cut, minimalist bedroom vibes. Symmetrical design and matching furniture can make your bedroom feel like a boring hotel, and this year it’s all about getting cosy in a personal design bubble that mixes in all your favourite things, especially with fabrics and textures (sherpa throw, anyone?).  “When it comes to creating cozy layers and easy textures in the bedroom, more is more,” says du Preez. “Layering a bedroom with softness and quality can elevate our emotional well-being and increase our positive energy.” According to du Preez, the easiest way to add layered depth to a bedroom is to start with the central feature: the bed. “Toss an ultra-plush throw on top of your comforter. From there you can weave in simple throws and scatter cushions for added dimension” (and dare we say a convenient option for those daytime naps?). Playing with texture and fabrics is a fun way to express your style in your personal space. When you’re done layering up your room’s star attraction, look for other opportunities to add texture and layers in unexpected places. You could consider using a rug or a natural hide as a wall hanging, or experiment with patterned wallpaper on a feature wall.

Layering  a bedroom with softness and quality can elevate our emotional  well being.  Be open to  adding textures  in unexpected places, such as natural hide as wall hangings.

3. Go bold with a feature wall (or headboard)

Speaking of feature walls, this is another trend we’re expecting to go big in bedrooms this year. Feature walls have definitely been having their moment in living rooms—with the gallery wall, for instance, and now they’re moving into the bedroom to help make a personal statement and add even more magnetism to the focal point of the room.  As du Preez explains, “an accent wall should normally be the first one you see first when you walk into a room, but in the bedroom, regardless of placement, it should really only be the wall behind the bed. Otherwise you risk creating a focal contradiction and confusing the look of the space.”  You can also opt to forego the accent wall and use a feature headboard instead. A striking upholstered headboard that draws attention through a moody colour or sumptuous texture is not only a great way to add your individuality—it’s got both a tactile and visual magnetism that’s guaranteed to draw you in (as if you needed another reason to escape to bed!).

4. Build the mood with colour drenching

If your toddler’s recent definition of ‘colour drenching’ involved baptizing your all-white bedding in a dose of their favourite candy-red juice, there’s never been a better time to ditch the (former) whites and go with the more sophisticated version that’s trending this year.  As du Preez explains, “colour drenching is about adding deep, moody tones to a space, with the same colour repeated in different elements in the room. For example, you can use your chosen colour in your bedding and on the headboard or a feature wall behind your bed, and again in an area rug or window dressings. You obviously don’t want to overdo it, but having those deeper colours accenting the space can really have a calming, soothing effect.”  While white and grey tones are taking a backseat, designers expect rich, moody charcoals and jewel tones like emerald green, navy, and wine red to dominate in many bedrooms this year.

Simply by changing the colour of a piece, can envoke a different mood. Choosing the right tones is very important to the design of a bedroom.

5. Create some drama with a canopy bed frame

If you really want to make sure everyone knows you’re the reigning monarch of your personal bedroom kingdom, nothing says it better than a four-poster bed. While the original concept probably brings to mind ornately carved solid wood and thick drapery—the stuff of castle-like period homes and luxury hotels—modern designs are perfectly at home in more contemporary spaces.  “Canopy beds made of metal or iron, for example, are very stylish and still let in a lot of light,” says du Preez. “Dramatic bedroom designs are definitely on trend in 2023 and nothing is quite as expressive as a canopy-poster bed frame to make a  and add an air of elegance to your space.”
