Corner couches, L-shape couches, sectionals, modular sofas…they go by many names, but one thing is clear: they’ve become so popular that it now feels almost rare to walk into a contemporary style home that doesn’t have one as the feature piece.

<pBut maybe you’re not one to just go with the trends. Maybe you prefer to do furniture on your own terms, without worrying about what’s hot or not.  Maybe you simply like to base your decisions on facts, logic and practicality (you rare creature, you!).

Corner couch

If that’s the case, you may be asking the simple question, is a corner sofa actually a good idea? Does it make sense for my space (particularly if that space is on the smaller side)? What are the pros and cons of a corner couch?  If I decide to buy one, am I potentially going to regret it in a few years’ time when I move house or decide I want to change up the layout of my living room?

If you’re preoccupied with any of these wonderings, this post is for you. Keep reading and we’ll have all those questions answered so you can shop for your perfect sofa with complete peace of mind!

Do Corner Couches Save Space or Use Up More?

This is the most common and ‘controversial’ question surrounding the corner sofa hype. The answer simply comes down to how much seating space you need. The corner couch is bigger than the average couch in terms of floor footprint, but it offers more seating in return for real estate.

Think of setting up a traditional lounge suite in a similar L-shape or U-shape configuration—no matter how optimal your arrangement, you’ll always end up with a corner or two of ‘dead space’. Sure, these corners may be a great spot for a side table or standing lamp—but if you’re working with a smaller living area, and your main priority is maximising seats for guests, or having plenty of lounging room, then the corner couch is the clear winner for efficient use of space.

There’s also the visual side to think about. A large, bulky sectional in a small room can definitely make the space feel cramped—but then, so can too many individual sofas. If you’ve got a modest space to work with, choosing a compact style corner couch and placing it in an otherwise awkward corner will help open up the remaining space, while still providing plenty of seating. And if you’ve got a large or open-plan living area, an L-shape sofa can help to section off and define your living or TV area, essentially ‘creating’ an additional space, which gives the entire room a better sense of balance and flow.

So, whether you’ve got a smaller or larger living space, a well-chosen, appropriately sized corner sofa is a great option to maximise the available space, both in terms of seating and visual feel. With that question answered, let’s take a look at some other pros and potential cons of the corner couch.

Corner Sofas—the Pros & Cons

Pro: Creates a relaxed, social atmosphere

Most people would probably agree that a cushy, spacious corner sofa instantly lends an inviting, social flavour to a space. And it’s not just the generous seating or plush cushions. The idea of connectedness is built right into the design—with fewer armrests creating formality and acting as borders between us, we naturally feel closer and more connected. The perpendicular seating arrangement also creates a casual conversational space, where eye contact is optional but not unnaturally forced, as it might be with a set of facing couches. The L-shape also creates a natural space to place a coffee table, completing a perfect setup for fun family nights, or inviting friends round for coffee or a movie.

Pro: Can create a natural partition for open-plan spaces

We’ve already touched on this, but it’s worth reiterating. The idea behind a sectional sofa is not just that it may be made up of separate parts, but that it actually serves to neatly section off the area it’s serving, without completely dividing it. With so many modern homes featuring open plan dining-kitchen-living areas, it’s no wonder the sectional couch has become something of a must-have.

This also raises the key point that corner couches don’t have to be used in corners. If you want to use a sectional to divide an open-plan area, but don’t like looking at the back of the couch, you can always add a stylish console table, or have it back-to-back with a sideboard for your dining area.

Pro: Versatile & Multifunctional

If you think of all the living room seating you could buy to suit every purpose and situation, you could end up with a long potential list of couches, recliners, daybeds, sleeper couches… But these days our space and budgets force us into prioritising. Which is one of the main reasons the corner sofa has become so popular—it ticks most of our modern boxes.

Pro: Value for Money

The price tag on a good quality corner sofa might seem like a ‘con’ at first glance, but as with any financial investment, it needs to be seen in perspective. To get a fair gauge of value for money, simply look at the amount of seating and functionality you get with the corner couch, and compare it to purchasing the same amount of actual seating space with a more traditional lounge suite setup. A corner couch of comparable quality will almost always turn out way more affordable—plus you get the added functionality of a couch/daybed/recliner combo, depending on your selection. The bottom line is, corner sofas offer the most cost-effective way to kit out your seating area in one go. (And you can always still add a fun accent chair if the mood takes you!).

Modular Sofas – Build it Your Way

When you’re not ready to commit to one particular couch configuration, the modular couch offers the most flexible and practical solution, giving you the freedom to customise your couch to fit your changing needs, available space, or preferences, rather than having to compromise on what you really want, or buy new furniture. Because you have full control over the layout, you can make your couch bigger or smaller, and choose the shape (L-shape, U-Shape, E-shape) according to the room layout or requirements of a particular event. And of course there’s the added plus that a modular couch is way easier to cart around, come moving day!
